Chelsea’s Kutir Elevates British Game with Indian Flair

Just off Sloane Square on Lincoln Street, Kutir occupies one of Chelsea’s elegant Georgian townhouses, transformed into a fine-dining Indian restaurant. Founded by Michelin-starred chef Rohit Ghai and Abhishake Sangwan, the restaurant combines intimacy with sophistication. Guests climb a few steps, ring the bell, and are welcomed into richly decorated dining rooms or, on warmer evenings, the pretty roof terrace. The name “Kutir,” meaning cottage in Sanskrit, reflects its aim to be a retreat from the bustle of London, where warm hospitality and quiet luxury go hand in hand.

This season, Kutir presents its Game Menu, a six-course tasting experience priced at £75 per person, with wine pairings available for £55. The menu celebrates British game while remaining firmly rooted in Indian culinary traditions, a reflection of Chef Ghai’s ability to merge classical techniques with seasonal ingredients. An à la carte option is also available, though the tasting menu offers the fullest journey.

Evenings begin with a choice of cocktails or mocktails. Among the signatures is the Sariska, a fragrant blend of Sipsmith gin, vermouth, basil, lavender syrup, ginger and pomegranate, bold yet refined. For a lighter start, the Bulbul offers a refreshing mix of Everleaf with grapefruit soda and fruit cordials, proving that non-alcoholic options can be as carefully crafted as their spirited counterparts.

The game tasting menu opens with partridge kurchan in a crisp semolina puff, paired with pumpkin chutney. It is light yet flavourful, paired with Gobillard brut rosé to lift its delicate sweetness. Buttermilk quail with harissa, soy and almond follows, playful in its creamy texture and gentle spice, perfectly matched with a supple New Zealand Pinot Noir.

The heart of the menu lies in two robust dishes: Guinea Fowl Korma and Duck Madras, served with rich kaali dal, steamed rice and butter naan. The korma is mild, tender and comforting, while the dal stands out as a deeply spiced classic, slow-cooked to perfection. The Duck Madras, however, steals the show. Roasted until perfectly pink, the breast is finished with a tamarind and curry leaf sauce that strikes a balance between sweet, sour and spicy. Paired with a glass of Château Ladignac Cru Bourgeois, it is one of the highlights of the evening.

A Venison Boti Kebab with peanut thecha rounds out the savoury courses. The venison is rich and earthy, complemented by the crunch and heat of the chutney, bold and satisfying before the menu turns to dessert.

Sweet courses are no less indulgent. The chocolate and peanut, made with Valrhona ganache and hazelnut crumble, is dark and melting, unapologetically rich.

Alternatively, the date and pecan dessert with cinnamon kulfi, caramel and pistachio offers notes of spice and sweetness, an elegant end to the meal.

Kutir’s Game Menu feels like more than a seasonal flourish. It reflects a philosophy that celebrates Indian culinary heritage while embracing the richness of British produce. Each course has its own character, yet the progression of flavours forms a coherent whole that feels both indulgent and considered.

With accolades including Restaurant of the Year at the British Restaurant Awards and a loyal following that extends to celebrity guests, Kutir has already established itself as a cornerstone of Chelsea dining. The Game Menu, however, reinforces the sense that the restaurant is constantly evolving. It demonstrates an ambition to innovate and to surprise, while maintaining the warmth and intimacy that make dining here feel like an escape.

For anyone seeking a taste of the season, Kutir is a great option. It is an experience of layered flavours, attentive service and understated elegance, housed within a townhouse that feels worlds away from the busy streets outside.

The friendly welcome at Kutir

The Game Menu captures autumn on a plate and reminds guests why Kutir continues to be one of London’s most celebrated dining destinations. There are two other tasting menu options (one vegetarian) and a full à la carte too – the kind of place where there’s no lack of choice. Service is warm and friendly, and there’s a charming intimacy in the maze of rooms.
