Caviar, Chicken, Champagne and Chips at Oblix, The Shard

At this time of year, the iconic Shard looks like an inverted Christmas Tree decoration. With special lighting effects throughout December to the New Year, it’s a cheerful beacon in a cold and rainy Capital and any excuse to visit is welcome. What better than the launch of Happy Hour at Oblix, where you can sit in comfort and style on the 32nd floor and look out over some of the most stunning views in London? It really is something quite special.

The Festive entrance to Oblix

We love Oblix – it’s part of the same group that owns Roka, Inko Niko and Zuma – all the work of Rainer Becker. You’ll find many similarities across the group with stunning dark wood furnishings, contemporary lighting and chic decor, Pan Asian food and a focus on quality. But, Oblix really wins because it is a restaurant with a view – one of the best in London, whether you sit in Oblix West (a more formal dining space serving a regular menu and weekend brunch) or East (a relaxed lounge and bar).

The Happy Meal happy hour really is a fabulous concept where food and drinks are kept simple but delicious so that you can focus on being with friends. The Oblix offering is remarkable value too – and I fully intend to go back because what could be better than a Martini and fries for just £16 (with a choice of 5 different martinis)? But, if you are looking for something a little more substantial, then there’s also the option of ‘Chicken and Champagne’ with crispy buttermilk chicken served with a honey lime and chilli glaze, and of course, a glass of Piper Heinsieck cuvee brut champagne for £24.

Finally, if, as we were, you are in the mood to celebrate a bit, then why not indulge in the Chicken and Caviar option, where for £38 you can have a delicious pot of crispy buttermilk chicken tenders, 10 grams of caviar and a good sized dollop of sour cream garnished with chives. For £10 extra you’ll get the champagne too.

Sitting looking out over the Thames, from Bankside across to St Pauls and the Tower of London is the ultimate glamour spot. And, the best thing about the Happy Meal at Oblix is that it’s just the right amount of food to set you up for the evening without making you feel like a pig in a blanket. We ordered the chicken with caviar and a plate of truffle and parmesan fries. It’s worth noting that in addition to the happy hour menu, there is a whole selection of grazing dishes on offer, from burgers and fries through to a seafood platter to share. So if you happen to fancy maxing out on more food and drink, well, that’s absolutely possible.

At the moment, there’s also a rather special Christmas cocktail menu including a wicked sounding ‘figgy pudding’ (Bulleit bourbon, Christmas pudding syrup, fig liquor and chocolate bitter) and a fragrant drink of gin, sloe gin, mulled wine syrup, pear, apple, lemon and spices. We didn’t indulge although we did try one of the mocktails.

We are seriously impressed with the Oblix Happy Meal and suggest you try it for yourself when you want to escape the Christmas crowds and experience a bit of laid-back luxury. If you are looking for something different, there’s also a festive afternoon tea on offer at Oblix and a really rather special weekend brunch menu to complement the regular menu. But, for those of us trying to juggle budgets in the lead-up to the big day, the Happy Meal is spot on – as it will be after Christmas when we all need cheering up.

Do book and give it a try
