Stecca Italian Restaurant – Review

Big Flavours in Little Chelsea Hollywood Road in the fashionable Kensington enclave of Little Chelsea has recently morphed into a foodie destination. The latest addition is Stecca, an Italian restaurant serving regional and seasonal cuisine with a ‘light and contemporary touch’. Chef/patron Stefano Stecca grew up in Rimini, a coastal town in Emilia Romagna which […]

Via Emilia – Regional Italian in London

Visiting Emilia Romagna without leaving London – Via Emilia: It is some time since I visited ‘In Parma‘ – a small Italian restaurant in Fitzrovia where you can enjoy a simple menu of pasta, meats and cheeses from Parma in Italy – while drinking fizzy red lambrusco from bowls as it would be served in Italy.  […]

The Lavender Bottomless Lunch

Bottomless Lunch in Battersea at The Lavender: On our way to review The Lavender Bottomless Lunch we knew we were heading in the right direction for a good time when several people passed us carrying balloons from the famous party shop at Clapham Junction… On arrival, we were greeted by a friendly waiter who explained […]

Visit Bankside – Food Month and Macellaio RC

Bankside Food Month – Macellaio RC and More Gentle reader, you may recall that just a few weeks ago I visited Macellaio RC, an Italian steakhouse in Battersea.  And, that was when I discovered there was a branch close to me, in Bankside.  Of course I really wanted to visit especially when I saw an […]

Macellaio Battersea – In Praise of Waiting

Macellaio Battersea – In Praise of Waiting

Italian Artisan Dining at Macellaio, Battersea: The restaurants and bars of Northcote Road used to be my stomping ground.  In days gone by, before there was really much of a food scene in London you could find a few decent wine bars along the road connecting Clapham Junction with the Common – and I’d often […]

Pizza Express Autumn Specials

An Autumn Menu at an Old Classic – Pizza Express: The Pizza Express in Coptic Street is an old friend which has been in the 1888 premises of what was originally the Dairy Supply Company since 1967. Charmingly you can still see many of the features of the original dairy including the ceramic tiles in […]

Baz and Fred – restaurant review

Baz & Fred in Flat Iron Square: Entering the bustling Flat Iron Square, one can quickly become overwhelmed by the sheer range of food and beverages being offered at a wide variety of stalls nestled under the train tracks headed to nearby London Bridge. Luckily for us, a red neon sign displaying a single word […]

The Italian Job – A taste of Italy comes to Notting Hill

The Italian Job, Notting Hill – Review: I’m always happy to hear about exciting new bars and restaurants, especially if they are local. All Saints Road in Notting Hill has for many years been a great destination for good food and cool bars for those in the know, so I was keen to visit the […]

Chelsea Flower Show at Ritorno

Previewing the Chelsea Flower Show Brunch at Ritorno: I love Chelsea during the flower show.  The local shops and businesses really get into the spirit of the event each year and the installations seem to be increasingly spectacular.  Not only that, but there are floral-themed cocktails and menus, all in keeping with the beautiful flower […]

  • April 12th  - National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day

The USA celebrates National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day on April 12th.   Well, why not?   Regarded as one of the top comfort foods in America, the version we eat today originated in the 1920s when sliced bread and American cheese became easily available.

    image

Of course, those of you from the USA and those of you wishing to join the celebrations can do so in London!  Head for the glamorous art-deco inspired Colony Grill at the Beaumont Hotel and you’ll find the menu offers a Grilled Cheese sandwich with Dill Pickle, perfect for National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day.  While you are there, enjoy a cocktail or three - and perhaps a couple of other American classics - we love the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and perhaps Bananas Foster flambeed in dark rum for dessert.

    Enjoy!
