Just in time for Burns Night celebrations, we check out Pivot restaurant’s sharing roast

4.0 out of 5.0 stars

There are places in Covent Garden you wouldn’t necessarily notice. This particular part of London is full of the obvious, the visibly glamorous and the hyped must-visit. Yet there are still places where you can eat well, enjoy a great atmosphere, and not break the bank. Pivot, with a first-floor dining room overlooking Covent Garden Piazza, is one such venue. A modern British bistro with an accessible yet still quirky menu, there’s something for everyone in a space with a warm ambience and genuine, friendly service.

On weekends, they have a special menu for small groups. While you need to order the Sharing Roast in advance, it will easily feed four people for just £99. For that, you’ll get roasties, veg, seasonal trimmings, and a selection of chicken, beef, and lamb, with lashings of piping-hot gravy to wash it all down.

We went along to check it out and were delighted to discover that there’s even a vegan offer – the table next door was enjoying a vegan sharing of chestnut mushroom, lentil and squash pies with gravy, roasties and the same fabulous selection of vegetables that we got (just see @lydiaeatsvegan and you’ll get the vibe)

But in the meantime, we started with a glass of prosecco each and a couple of starters to share. A plate of smoked salmon served with toasted sourdough with horseradish cream was an easy win, while we all loved the light, beautifully flavoured confit chicken terrine served with hazelnuts and piccalilli. The sharing roast doesn’t include starters or desserts, but if I’m honest you probably won’t need them!

Our sharing roast was, of course, the main attraction. We were presented with a large wooden board, piled high with half a roast chicken, pigs in blankets, roast ham hock and roast striploin of beef. There was more than enough meat for us, particularly given the wealth of sides – deliciously crispy roast potatoes, crisp, giant Yorkshire puddings, a generous platter of buttered cabbage and sprouts, roast carrots and plenty of gravy.

Our meat options varied a little from the sharing roast menu, which offers a turkey ballotine rather than chicken and lamb shank rather than ham hock, but everything was delicious.

We really didn’t need to order the cauliflower cheese too, but were more than impressed with the perfectly cooked florets laced with lashings of melted cheese sauce. There were even pigs in blankets! An excellent Sunday Roast Sharing Feast

For dessert, we shared a couple of options (not included in the price of the sharing roast, but definitely worth the extra!) – Winter Berry Pavlova and Dark Chocolate Mousse with amarena cherry.

The pavlova, a classic favourite, was picture perfect and disappeared in a few seconds. The chocolate mousse was rich and deeply flavoured, laced with sweet cherries. My kind of pudding!

Pivot’s generous sharing roast is being customised for Burns Night. Already a handsome centrepiece designed for convivial tables, for one weekend only, on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th January, it will arrive laden with a distinctly Scottish flourish: rich, peppery haggis, buttery neeps and tatties, and the pleasing indulgence of a Scotch egg or two. It’s the sort of feast you’ll appreciate, whether you’re honouring your Caledonian roots or simply embracing the poetry of good food shared well. Priced at £99 for four, it sounds like the perfect way to celebrate. You’ll be pleased to know that alongside a well-priced wine list, they also have a great selection of whiskies, perfect for a wee dram in honour of Rabbie Burns!

Pivot, hidden in full sight, doesn’t need to shout for customers – perhaps that is its strength. With views over the Piazza, a changing seasonal menu and a focus on food that is meant to be enjoyed without fuss, it offers a welcome sense of ease in a busy and rather tourist-led part of town.

Whether you arrive for a quick lunch to break up your shopping trip, a celebratory feast or a leisurely weekend lunch, it is the kind of place that leaves you feeling well looked after and quietly pleased you found it. And the sharing roast is the perfect option for weekend meetups.
